By the 1700's, the game had spread with great popularity throughout France and England. English billiards, which greatly resembles today's carom, became the popular game all the way through to the 1900's. Towards the end of the 18th century, wool had replaced cotton as the fabric of choice for cloth. This was done to improve the friction of the ball contact on the playing surface.Probably the most influential time was during the 1800's. The modern cue, as we know it, was produced early in the century. Shortly after, an infantry man and billiards player, François Mingaud, brought the cue to market. The Englishman, John Thurston, replaced the wooden playing surfaces with slate and also invented the first rubber cushion to allow better and more accurate ball rebound from the rail. Basically, this century produced the "modern" table very close to what we have today and it seems to have the most credited advances in the industry.
